The mission of the Petroleum Quality Institute of America  is to educate and serve consumers of commercial, consumer, and industrial lubricants by monitoring and reporting on the quality of lubricants in the marketplace.

Industrial Lubricants

Industrial lubricants comprise a wide verity of lubricant types and a broad array of diverse and diffuse end-use applications. Lubricants consumed in this market segment are typically segmented into five categories, including process oil, general industrial lubricants, industrial engine oil, metalworking fluids and grease.

Process oil is the leading lubricant category in the industrial market segment. By definition, process oils are typically lightly additized base stocks that are consumed are used in the processing of various end products. One example of process oil is seen in the tire and rubber manufacturing business. Process oil is used in this application as extender oil in the rubber that goes into making tires, belts and others. Another example is seen with transformer oil. Rather than performing as lubricants, these oils are used as an integral part of the transform.

Industrial applications are typically consider the most sensitive to the quality of lubricant in use.
