PETROLEUM QUALITY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA TEST PROGRAM
The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality of lubricants in the marketplace. Our mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by randomly sampling and independently testing lubricants taken from the field. Test results are posted along with the brand names on the PQIA website. Although laboratory tests alone cannot be used to establish if engine oil meets an API Service Category, they can be used to determine if it doesn't.

Black Knight 10-30, API SB/CB Motor Oil Black Knight Products, Jasper, TX
Purchased in: Edison, NJ Date of purchase: 10/2013
CONSUMER ALERT - The labels on this product say "10-30 Motor Oil", implying to consumers that the oil meets the SAE 10W-30 viscosity grade.
The back label
goes on to say the oil is "Recommended for Pre-1988
Gasoline and Diesel Engines Requiring
SB/CB Motor Oil". API SB/CB are old obsolete
specifications. The API cautions that the
SB specification is
"Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automotive
engines built after 1951. Use in more modern engines
may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment
harm", and
the CB specification is
"Not suitable
for use in diesel-powered engines built after 1961. In addition,
PQIA's analysis shows high levels of silicon, which
is often associated with abrasive contamination. |
