Petroleum Quality Institute of America

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality and performance of lubricants in the marketplace.  Our mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by reporting on the quality and integrity of lubricants in themarketplace.

Sunoco Multi-Purpose ATF

Sunoco Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Purchased in: Sunoco A-Plus, Edison, NJ

Date of purchase: 1/17/2012

NOTE - The Sunoco Multi-Purpose ATF label states that the product is recommended for transmissions where Dexron III or Mercon is recommended. PQIA's test results for this sample exceed the Dexron III and Mercon specification for Brookfield Viscosity @ -40°C of 20,000 cP maximum. It should be noted, however, that the Brookfield test reproducibilty is 1,850 cP.

Sunoco ATF
General Motors and Ford Motor Company has set forth a number of laboratory and rig tests required to meet the former Dexron III and Mercon performance specifications. Although laboratory tests alone cannot be used to establish if an ATF meets these specifications, they can be used to determine if it doesn't.

The following is a comparison of the test results for the sample of Sunoco ATF tested with the Dexron III/Mercon requirements.

Viscometrics

PQIA's test results for this sample fail the Dexron III and Mercon specification for Brookfield Viscosity @ -40C of 20,000 cP maximum, however the average of two test results falls just within the test reproducibility.
